A DRIVER has captured a terrifying “ant tornado” flying towards her after warm weather hit the region.

The startling footage was recorded by a driver near the Ukrainian city of Melitopol.

In the nightmarish clip, the driver is seen driving down a rural road lined with trees.

After pulling over, she zooms in to a dark shaded cloud lingering in front of her windscreen.

It soon becomes apparent the cloud is made up of flying ants.

The skittish swarm can be seen landing on the woman’s windscreen as another dark shaded swarm can be seen in the distance.

The driver can be heard saying: “Horror.”

Experts have explained this phenomenon is caused by high temperatures and humidity.

The bizarre sighting is observed every year in late July and early August.

It is thought the driver encountered this swarm as it is the black garden ants’ mating season in the area.

Reports state that this year the insects are especially numerous due to favourable weather conditions for their reproduction.

Despite the horror sighting, insect experts assure that even in such large numbers the ants pose no risk to humans.

It is not the first time a sighting like this has hit the headlines.
