Antoine Griezmann hits out at Spanish ABC after they compared Ansu Fati to 'black street vendors'

‘No to racism and no to bad education’: Antoine Griezmann hits out at Spanish news outlet ABC after they compared his Barcelona team-mate Ansu Fati to ‘black street vendors’ after Champions League win

  • Ansu Fati created Champions League history as Barcelona beat Ferencvaros
  • But Spanish outlet ABC made derogatory comparisons to describe Fati, 17
  • Reporter Salvador Sostres said Fati reminded him of ‘black street vendors’
  • Antoine Griezmann was incensed with the comments and hit back on Twitter

Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann has condemned comments from a Spanish news outlet comparing team-mate Ansu Fati to ‘black street vendors’.

The 17-year-old Spain international became the first player in history to score two Champions League goals before turning 18 as Barcelona opened their new campaign on Tuesday evening with a 5-1 drubbing of Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros.

However, a report on the game from Spanish outlet ABC made derogatory comparisons to describe Fati due to the colour of his skin, with reporter Salvador Sostres stating that the teenager reminded him of ‘black street vendors’ who would run away upon seeing police rushing towards them.

The comment angered France international Griezmann, who quote tweeted a picture of the report and then replied: ‘Ansu is an exceptional kid who deserves respect like any human being. No to racism and no to bad education.’

In his match report, Sostres included the paragraph: ‘Ansu was close to scoring with a kick of a pure striker, perfectly turning his body.

‘Ansu when running has something similar to a gazelle, he looks like a young and black street seller, the one you could see running in the Paseo de Gracia [major avenue in Barcelona] shouting “water, water” when the policemen arrive.

‘Postcards of a jungle in the heart of the city. Now it doesn’t happen anymore because of Ada Colau [Mayor of Barcelona], the delinquents are the policemen and not the street sellers, who don’t need to run away quickly anymore.

‘It is true that without tourists, their business goes down.’

Sportsmail has contacted ABC for comment.

Fati made his way into the first-team picture last season and is currently Barcelona’s leading goalscorer in all competitions in the current campaign, scoring his fourth already this term on Tuesday.

Despite his rapid rise to Barcelona regular and Spain international, the teenager insists he still has much to learn and will continue to take advice from club star Lionel Messi.

‘Thanks to all my team-mates, they make things easy for me,’ he told Movistar after the match against Ferencvaros.

‘Messi is still Messi. He can score in any action. We are very happy to have him here with us and I continue to learn from him.’
