Aston Villa will be hoping to make a return to the top-tier of English football today but will have to defeat a Derby team that achieved a dramatic victory over Leeds in the semi-finals in order to do so.

Following Derby’s progression to the Championship play-off final, manager Frank Lampard stated the comeback against Leeds was “fantastic” and expressed his excitement about being able to compete for a place in the top-tier of English football.

He said: “I wanted it so much, sometimes you can want something too much, but we have done it tonight. They say emotions are intensified when you are a manager and it is true.

“As a manager you are worrying about so many different things, you feel responsible for everything, so the euphoria after a result like that, after losing the first leg 1-0, it is easy to get caught up in the emotion.

“The feeling I’ve had tonight matches anything I’ve had in football, the way I’m feeling right now. I aimed high, I was aware of the financial issues, so to get to Wembley, it is fantastic.”

Meanwhile, Villa manger Dean Smith recently emphasised his squad have the chance to become “icons” at the club if they pull of a victory later today.

He told BBC WM: “It’s not a normal game, we know that, you can’t hide it.

“The players have the chance to take an opportunity forward and become icons at Aston Villa.”

“We’ve been playing must-win games for the past 15 or 16 games now and Monday will be no different.”
