Even by box office analyst predictions, Avengers Endgame’s box office was unprecedented. Thought to gross around $250-280 million during its opening weekend, the Marvel epic had the biggest of all time with $350,000 domestically. But adding foreign markets in and the worldwide total was an unbelievable $1.209 billion for the opening weekend alone. This means Avengers Endgame debuts as the 18th highest grossing film of all time.
In just its opening few days, Avengers Endgame has topped the lifetime gross of massive blockbusters like Captain America: Civil War, Aquaman, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and most recently, Captain Marvel.
Aside from having the world record for the biggest opening weekend ever, the film also came top on single day grosses for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is the fastest film to reach $1 billion ever.
No film before has ever made over $1 billion in its opening, with Avengers Endgame doing so in its first five days.
In comparison, the previous record holder was its predecessor Avengers Infinity War, which took 11 days to reach this goal.
Avengers Infinity War finished fourth highest grossing film of all time, with $2.048 billion behind Star Wars The Force Awakens’ $2.068 billion and Titanic’s $2.187 billion.
This means Avengers Endgame is very likely to finish ahead of these movies in terms of its total worldwide gross.
But the real question is, can the Marvel epic top the biggest film of all time, Avatar, which took $2.787 billion ten years ago.
It’s certainly in the realms of possibility, but Endgame will have to succeed in big foreign markets like China where it’s opening is already bigger than Avatar’s and Infinity War’s.
