Lily James looked ‘about as comfortable as a trainee tightrope walker’ during her first TV appearance since the photos of her and Dominic West came to light, a body language expert has revealed.
The actress, 31, spoke to US late night host Jimmy Fallon in a virtual interview yesterday – her first since she was snapped canoodling with 51-year-old Dominic on the streets of Rome.
Analysing the footage for FEMAIL, body language Judi James explained Lily looked ‘tentative’ and ‘anxious’ as she ‘picked away along’ the five-minute chat.
It was a far cry from the ‘smug-looking’ display put on by Dominic when he joined wife Catherine FitzGerald, 49, for a bizarre photocall outside their Cotswolds home and produced a handwritten note insisting their ‘marriage was strong’.

Lily James, 31, spoke to US late night host Jimmy Fallon in a virtual interview yesterday – her first since she was snapped canoodling with 51-year-old Dominic on the streets of Rome. Body language expert Judi James noted she looked ‘tentative’. Pictured, James ‘grimacing’
The actress displayed ‘self-comfort hair touches’ (seen left), according to Judi, as she ‘picked through her first interview’. Fallon didn’t address the photos but she still looked anxious
Fallon did not ask Lily about the photos, which were published last week, and instead focused on her new film Rebecca, released on Netflix yesterday, and rumours that there might be a third Mama Mia!
But even that wasn’t enough to make Lily feel at ease.
Judi said: ‘Although her host tactfully side-stepped any mention of the current rumours about her personal life, the fact that Lily was plugging a movie where she plays a naïve young woman besotted with an charming older man living in a huge castle-like home meant she looked about as comfortable as a trainee tight-rope walker as she picked her way along this first interview since all the press frenzy.
‘Lily began with an air of modest sweetness that included a head-tilt, downward glances and a tentative smile that was pulled down at the corners and which didn’t quite make it as far as her eyes.
‘Waiting for her first question, that head-tilt increased, suggesting vulnerability, and she performed a lip-bite and small tongue-poke to hint at some anxiety.’
Anxious start: ‘Lily began with an air of modest sweetness that included a head-tilt, downward glances and a tentative smile that was pulled down at the corners (pictured),’ Judi said
Not committed: Judi also noted that Lily’s wrists were limp while she was gesturing (pictured)
Early in the conversation the pair discussed how Lily has been teaching Broadway classes over Zoom.
The ‘neutral and safe subject made her look more relaxed,’ Judi noted. ‘Her chin rose and her tongue moved to the side of her mouth. Even when she was speaking though, her throw-away gesticulations were punctuated by a couple of self-comfort hair touches.
‘Lily’s hand gestures were often limp and with the wrists bent. When she mentioned trying to “have some fun” her mouth pulled up at one side in what looked like a grimace.
When the subject turned to Mama Mia! the actress became more confident.
Cosy: Almost two weeks ago, Lily, 31, caused shockwaves around the globe when she was seen getting close with married Dominic, 51, during a trip to Rome
Judi continued: ‘The hair touch becoming a hair-preen and partial pit-bare and her chin and eyebrows raising in pleasure.
‘Lily’s enthusiasm was clear as she described her film Rebecca, but her body became self-diminished and she moved the attention from herself and her own stunning performance via a long, generous speech of fan-girl-style praise for Kristin Scott Thomas, who co-stars as Mrs. Danvers.’
Judi, who also analysed Dominic West’s behaviour in his bizarre photocall with his wife, noted their body language was very different.
Contrast: It was a far cry from the ‘smug-looking’ display put on by Dominic when he joined wife Catherine FitzGerald, 49, for a bizarre photocall outside their Cotswolds home and produced a handwritten note insisting their ‘marriage was strong’ (pictured)
She added: ‘Sadly, Lily’s modest and rather tentative-looking body language here was in complete contrast to Dominic’s during his first appearance with his wife, where he seemed to present a rather more smug-looking, chest-puffed pose.’
Lily’s appearance comes after she pulled out of a press junket with just 45 minutes and no explanation the day after she was pictured with Dominic.
Lily’s last minute decision to pull out sparked a wave of cancellations, as she then scrapped planned appearances on Friday’s installment of The Graham Norton Show and Monday’s Today show in America.
