Son Pasquale, 14, suffered head injuries and paramedics raced to the scene but there was nothing they could do.

Police in Monterotondo, Italy, said the youngster may have rushed to help his father when he saw he was about to fall.

Horrified Gabrielle called emergency services himself and was treated for shock and cuts and bruises by paramedics.

Cops questioned him about the tragedy and he told them he had been thrown off balance by a strong blast of wind, fell and landed on his son.

A police spokesman said:”This was a tragic accident and the father is very upset. It was an unfortunate combination of circumstances and it appears he fell because of the high wind.

“By an atrocious destiny he fell onto his son who suffered fatal injuries. He himself was unhurt but was obviously very shocked.”

He was one of five people killed in unseasonably fierce storms which swept central Italy on Saturday.

Other victims were killed by falling masonry or trees as they travelled in cars
