BREAKING: AZ Alkmaar’s 17,000-seater football stadium collapses

THE roof of AZ Alkmaar’s 17,023-seater stadium has collapsed and destroyed part of a stand.

Shocking pictures have emerged showing a mangled wreck strewn across the Dutch team’s main stand.

Miraculously no-one was in the stadium at the time of the collapse, which came as strong winds battered south Holland.

The AFAS Stadion is centred in Alkmaar 25 miles outside of Amsterdam.

AZ travel to RKC Waalwijk in a league match on Sunday, having played at home against Fortuna Sittard last weekend.

The Europa League third round qualifying match against FC Mariupol at the AFAS Stadion will now be re-scheduled due to the damage at their stadium.

Today’s dramatic incident comes just years after AZ suffered a fire at their stadium in 2013 during a Europa League clash against Greek side Atromitos.

Spectators had to evacuate the stadium during the second half while the hosts were losing 1-0, but winning 3-2 on aggragate.

The game eventually had to be abandoned after 57 minutes, with AZ played the remaining 33 minutes of their play-off against Atromitos a day later.

Atromitos scored another goal in the second game, but AZ won and went through on away goal.
