THE Greek island of Crete has been rocked by a huge 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

Crete was hit by a 5.2 magnitude tremor just after 11am local time. 

According to seismologists, the quakes epicentre was 40 miles north of Crete in the sea at a depth of 35 miles. 

British holidaymakers said the tremor shook the island, with one claiming she was woken by the quake. 

There have been no immediate reports of damage to buildings or local infrastructures.
