Carl Scott’s body was discovered in his cell at HMP Dovegate near Uttoxeter at 7pm on Monday (May 7).
The 46-year-old, of Cherry Hill Avenue, Meir, was on remand accused of murdering Jayde Hall, aged 26, after her body was found at an address in Meir last week.
He had appeared at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Bank Holiday Monday before he was found dead that evening.
His death was revealed this morning during a hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Prosecutor Bob Price said: “I understand the defendant took his own life on Monday.
“His victim, Jayde Hall, died on Friday, May 24 and he was arrested in the early hours the following day and charged on May 26.
“He appeared in court on Bank Holiday Monday and transferred to Dovegate where he was remanded in custody.
“At 7pm police officers were informed he took his own life by way of hanging.”
Judge Paul Glenn adjourned the case for an indictment to be written up and for evidence of the death to be produced by Staffordshire Police.
He said: “I’m quite happy to wait for such evidence. It would be good to have a death certificate or evidence from someone who identified the body.”
Mr Price told the judge he believes officers can produce evidence today (Wednesday).
Scott was arrested and charged with murder following the discovery of Jayde’s body on Friday.
After her death, Jayde’s family said: “We just can’t believe what’s happened. Jayde’s death has broken our hearts.
“We would like to thank friends and family for all their kind wishes at this terrible time.
“We are not sure how we will ever get over this, but we ask to be given the time and space to grieve in private.”
Officers were called to Cherry Hill Avenue at just before 10pm to reports a woman had been stabbed – but a cause of death has not yet been released.
