PEOPLE who have gay sex or commit adultery face being stoned to death as brutal Sharia laws are brought in by the southeast Asian kingdom of Brunei.

Theft will also be punishable by amputation of feet or hands, under the new legislation which has been branded “cruel and inhuman” by human rights groups.

The harsh new measures were found announced in 2013, but officials struggled to get them implemented amid criticism from the international community.

But the laws may finally be pushed through — reportedly taking effect from April 3.

“To legalise such cruel and inhuman penalties is appalling of itself”

The Sultan of Brunei, who has ruled the tiny nation since 1967, has previously described the Shariah Penal Code as “special guidance” from God.

A spokesman for the Brunei religious affairs ministry said the new Sharia laws would not be implemented on April 3, but instead Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was expected to make an announcement that day regarding their implementation.

“Only after the event we will know regarding the date of the implementation of the new laws,” he told AFP.

He added: ”In terms of readiness, at the moment we are prepared to enforce the amputation of the hand for stealing only. That is all.”

Homosexuality was already illegal in Brunei, but now would be a capital offence.

The move has sparked a backlash amongst human rights campaigners.

“To legalise such cruel and inhuman penalties is appalling of itself,” Amnesty International Brunei researcher Rachel Chhoa-Howard said in a statement.

“Some of the potential ‘offences’ should not even be deemed crimes at all, including consensual sex between adults of the same gender.”

Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch said: “If this ill-considered plan goes forward, there is every reason to believe the global boycott Brunei movement will re-start.”

He added that the nation would become the only one in southeast Asia to punish homosexual sex with death if the plans go ahead.
