Cam Newton finally has a home, and the former Carolina Panthers QB expressed his gratitude to the New England Patriots with his typically odd choice of scripture.
“I’m excited as I don’t know what right now! All praise to God… I hope you’re ready. #LetsGoPats,” Newton wrote on his Instagram story, written in mostly capital letters and special characters as he is known to do on social media.
He also wrote “1ove” at the bottom, implying he may continue to wear the No. 1 he wore throughout his nine seasons in Carolina.
The three-time Pro Bowler struck a one-year minimum deal with the Patriots on Sunday, an incentive-laden contract worth up to $7.5 million, after a long, drawn-out offseason that had a number of surprising twists. First, Carolina attempted to deal Newton, publicly claiming they “gave him permission” to seek a trade which Newton said he never wanted.
Carolina then unceremoniously released the former NFL MVP, and he remained on the market for months as QBs such as Case Keenum, Chase Daniel and Marcus Mariota all signed multi-year deals.
Newton is coming off a Lisfranc injury in his foot and multiple shoulder surgeries, which likely explained his extended free agency. But the Patriots took a flier on the star QB, one that could pay off in a big way if he is healthy as the Patriots had unproven Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer in the wake of Tom Brady’s departure.
