Chelsea flop Kenneth Omeruo joins Leganes in £4.6m transfer after not playing single match for club in seven-years

KENNETH OMERUO has ended his seven-year stint at Chelsea – without ever playing a game for the Blues.

The 25-year-old defender last night secured a permanent move to Leganes following an impressive loan spell last season.

The La Liga side have forked out £4.6million for the Nigerian international, who has penned a five-year contract.

Omeruo joined Chelsea in 2012 from Standard Liege.

But the versatile star, who can operate at right-back or at centre-half, struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge and spent almost his entire time there elsewhere.

He spent time on loan in Holland, Turkey, Spain and with Championship club Middlesbrough.

However, Omeruo’s performances over the past 12 months for Leganes have convinced them to buy him outright.

He played 31 times for them in the Spanish top-flight to help them finish tenth.

A Chelsea statement confirmed his departure, adding: “We would like to thank Kenneth for his service and wish him all the best for the future.”

Omeruo has plenty of experience at international level, winning 50 caps for his country.

He has represented the Super Eagles at both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

And he also helped them to reach the last-four of this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament he won five years ago.
