SunSport understands the England Under-19 star is highly regarded among the coaching staff at Cobham.

Uwakwe is hoping the imminent arrival of Frank Lampard with Jody Morris could mean a chance to stake a claim for a spot in the first-team squad this season.

Morris is a big fan of the youngster who played a significant role in winning the FA Youth Cup twice before he joined Lampard at Pride Park last year.

Chelsea rejected an approach from West Brom in January for Uwakwe as the Baggies wanted a temporary move with a view to a permanent switch.

The Blues are looking to tie up all their highly-rated kids following their two-window ban.

And in turn, some youngsters want to hang around to as there could be a genuine path to the first-team when Lampard and Morris finally take charge.

Juan Familio-Castillo is one who is ready to sit down with Chelsea to discuss a new deal.

The winger, 19, is another kid who worked with Morris in the Blues Youth ranks and fancies his chances of impressing during pre-season.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Andreas Christensen and Callum Hudson-Odoi still need to be convinced their long-term future is in West London.

Hudson-Odoi is recovering from an Achilles injury with another year to run on his contract and is still a target for Bayern Munich.

And with the club banned from signing new players Kurt Zouma, Mason Mount and Reece James are expected to be given a chance to stake a claim for first-team football under the new regime.
