A child was killed in Frankfurt on Monday after being deliberately pushed into the path of a train, according to witness reports.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Initial reports suggest the attack was random and unprovoked.

The eight-year-old victim was on the platform of Frankfurt’s main station with his mother when they were both pushed in front of an oncoming train. The mother was able to scramble to freedom but could not save her son. Neither has been named under German privacy laws.

The suspect, who has also not been named, is reportedly of Eritrean origin. His motives remained unclear on Monday.

Following the initial attack he tried to push a third person off the platform, but this time his intended victim was able to escape.

The assailant then attempted to flee the packed station but was prevented by bystanders who had witnessed the incident. Rescue workers rushed to the scene but were unable to save the eight-year-old boy.
