China zoo worker fatally mauled by bears in front of horrified visitors

A zoo employee was mauled to death by a group of bears over the weekend in China as visitors watched in horror.

The gruesome incident occurred in the “wild beast” exhibit Saturday at Shanghai Wildlife Park, the BBC reported.

Footage posted to Chinese social media platform Weibo shows parkgoers scream from inside a tour bus as a group of bears run toward and surround the employee, Australian outlet ABC News reported.

“There’s someone!” one of the parkgoers shouts, while another could be heard asking, “What’s going on?”

Shanghai Wildlife Park said it was “saddened” by the employee’s death in a statement posted to its website.

“Our park is extremely saddened by such a tragedy, expressing deep condolences to the deceased, expressing deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and apologizing for the inconvenience it caused to tourists,” the statement said.

It’s unclear what type of bears were involved or whether they will remain at the wildlife park.

The exhibit has been temporarily closed to visitors as the park works with local authorities to investigate the incident, the zoo said.
