CHRIS EVANS today hails hero troops as “national treasures” as he launches this year’s Sun Military Awards.

The cherished gongs — affectionately dubbed the Millies — are back for their 12th year to celebrate the “greatest Armed Forces in the world”, in Chris’s words.

Our new judge has kicked off this year’s awards process with a stirring tribute to the men and women of the Royal Navy, Army and RAF.

The Virgin Radio DJ, 53, said: “No one deserves greater thanks than the men and women of our Armed Forces. They are all national treasures, and what they do makes us all proud.

“Day in and day out they serve at home and abroad, away from their loved ones, families and friends, putting themselves in harm’s way for this country.

“And they do it with compassion, devotion and plenty of humour. They are the greatest Armed Forces in the world, and it’s an incredible honour to be at this year’s Millies.”

Nominations are now open in ten categories — see the panel, below right — and Chris, added: “It’s a unique event and a massive opportunity to say a resounding and heartfelt thank you.

SACRIFICE AND GALLANTRY

“So please get those nominations coming in. This is everyone’s chance to show our Armed Forces how much we appreciate all that they do.”

The Millies — sponsored by BAE Systems — honour serving personnel and reservists for acts of sacrifice and gallantry during the past year, and pay tribute to the companies and charities that have supported the Armed Forces community in the last 12 months.

Chris joins a host of new judges for this year’s event, including BBC newsreader Kate Silverton, 49.

She said: “As the wife of a former Royal Marines Commando and as a journalist who has reported from the front line in both Basra and Helmand I am honoured to have been invited to join the Millies’ esteemed panel of judges.”

Kate added: “I have seen personally the great sacrifices made by the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving in the forces and it is a privilege to be able to honour them in the way The Sun does so brilliantly with the Millies.”

They will be joined on the night by new Defence Secretary, former soldier Ben Wallace.

He said: “From individual heroic acts to overcoming personal adversity, the Millies demonstrate that we have the best Armed Forces in the world and give everyone the opportunity to show their appreciation for the work they do.

“I would like to thank The Sun for hosting the Millies for the past 11 years and for their unwavering support to the defence community.”
