Coronavirus horror: Global cases surpass devastating new milestone

The number of cases is approximately double hat of severe influenza illnesses reported each year, according to the World Health Organisation. Despite the high number of cases, countries have started lifting their lockdowns making disruptive adjustments to work and social spaces that could last for a year or until a vaccine is found.

Fresh outbreaks in some countries have prompted authorities to implement part of their lockdowns again.

A stark warning from experts suggests it could be a persistent situation in the following months and next year.

North America, Latin America and Europe each represent around 25 percent of infections.

Asia and the Middle East have around 11 percent and 9 percent of cases respectively, according to the Reuters tally, which uses government-supported data.

The Covid-19 death toll is currently nearing half a million, with 497,000 casualties recorded so far, approximately the same number as influenza deaths recorded each year.

The first infections of coronavirus were reported on January 10 this year.

Wuhan, a major Chinese city, recorded 10 cases before the first the first infections were found in in Europe, the United States, and later Russia.

Currently, India and Brazil are some of the worst-hit countries, with the number of infections topping 10,000 each day, putting extensive pressure on their healthcare services.
Brazil has reached 54,700 new infections on June 19, a record number so far.

The United Stated is the country with the most cases reported, with over 2.5 million infections confirmed.

Despite having slowed the contagion rate in May, the US has seen a hike in recent weeks in rural regions and other areas that did not have as many cases before.

In some countries with less testing capacity, the number of cases reported only represents a small portion of the real number of cases.
