Couple finds $25K worth of coins in new home, returns stash to owner

This couple has a heart of gold.

New homeowners James and Clarrisa Munford stumbled upon $25,000 of antique gold and silver coins after moving into their South Carolina abode — and returned the treasure trove to the previous owner.

“I was just thinking, you know, they’re not mine,” James, who’d texted pictures of the coins to the seller, told CNN. “They’re probably a family heirloom, so I’m gonna go ahead and make sure he gets them back.”

James discovered the collection hidden in built-in drawers in his closet in October, after he and his wife closed on the home in Columbia.

Two cases contained 46 gold Liberty $5 coins and 18 Morgan silver dollars made in the 1800s.

“They looked real old, like they were really worth a lot of money,” James said.

The previous homeowner, who didn’t want to be named, said the coins were worth about $25,000.

But to the Munfords, who are retired from the Army, it didn’t matter.

“We really didn’t know anything about the value of the coins,” said Clarrisa. “We really didn’t care, to be honest with you, we knew they were his.”

The rightful owner stuck the coins in the back of his sock drawer for safe keeping and forgot about them in the rush of moving. The rest of his coin collection was in his safe.

“He just thanked me because he said there’s not too many honest people out there” who would’ve returned the stash, James said.
