Cut down on extra holiday costs with these airport drop-off money saving tips

FLYING isn’t often plane sailing, when it comes to costs. Forking out for a foreign holiday hits the wallet and extra fees at the airport are the last thing you want before you jet off.

Most UK airports charge sky-high prices for spending ten minutes in drop-off zones. But you can save dosh if you follow my tips . . .

SUSS IT OUT: Do your research before setting off and plan a different, free drop-off accordingly, always bearing in mind those flying may need to walk up to 15 minutes or take a free shuttle bus. For example, Luton offers two hours of free parking in its long-stay airport car park, but passengers will have to get a shuttle to the terminal.

MAP YOUR ROUTE: If your airport doesn’t have an easily accessible free drop-off point, check out the locality. Some airports have fast food outlets or coffee shops nearby and you may be able to be dropped off for free at these and either walk or grab a bus for cheaper than the drop-off fee.

SAVE ELSEWHERE: If your passenger prefers the ease of being left right outside the terminal, consider trying to make your costs back elsewhere. Hunt down the cheapest petrol on your route using petrolprices.com to search prices. Passengers could also save money back by taking snacks, rather than forking out on airport food . . .

PARK YOUR COSTS: If you seriously begrudge being charged for set-down and collection, an alternative is to drive yourself to the airport and park up. Yes, it will cost more, but the peace of mind it gives you is valuable, and it can’t be beaten for convenience.

Sites such as airparks.co.uk, will show costs and availability, but make sure you use a trusted service and pre-book your parking online in advance to get the best deal. For example, by comparing, I found that I could save at least £17 when parking for a week at Glasgow airport this October by using a recommended off-site car park for £40.99 — compared to Glasgow’s long-stay park, £57.99, or short-stay one, £79.99. Happy holidays!
