Dana White reveals UFC have released legendary middleweight Anderson Silva from his contract

Dana White reveals UFC have released legendary middleweight Anderson Silva from his contract with one fight remaining as the Brazilian weighs up whether to return to MMA after retiring last month

  • Brazilian Anderson Silva announced his intentions to retire from UFC this year
  • Silva’s last fight was his fourth round defeat to Uriah Hall in October’s Fight Night
  • UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Silva’s UFC contract is now over
  • Silva is now able to represent any other promotion in MMA or combat sports

Anderson Silva has now been released from his UFC contract after announcing his retirement last month, according to president Dana White.

The 45-year-old middleweight was defeated in the fourth round by Uriah Hall in their Fight Night clash at the end of October, in a fight that had already been billed as the Brazilian’s final bow in UFC by White.

While Silva is yet to commit to retirement with one fight remaining on his current contract, White confirmed to TMZ Sports on Thursday that the veteran will not make another appearance in the octagon.

Silva is now free to take on any other promotion, such as another MMA or combat sport discipline, following the release of his contract.

That idea, according to White, would be ‘disgusting’ and the UFC president urged the fighter’s family to convince him not to fight again.

‘[It is] disgusting that a commission would let him fight again,’ he told reporters via TheMacLife.

‘He is a grown man, he can do whatever he wants. I like and I respect the guy and I just hope his family talks him out of it.’

The Brazilian-born fighter had lost seven out of his last eight fights since losing the UFC Middleweight Championship to Chris Weidman in July 2013.

A serious leg injury in a rematch against Weidman later that year saw him miss the entire 2014 MMA schedule and he has only won one fight since then.

Silva was tipped to take on fellow icon Conor McGregor in the cctagon during his career, but his retirement has scuppered any plans to take on the Irishman.

At 45-years-old, Silva was the oldest fighter on the UFC roster before announcing his retirement.
