David Coulthard believes Michael Schumacher would've found his match against Lewis Hamilton

Michael Schumacher would be ‘staring in the eyes of his equal’ if he competed with Lewis Hamilton at his peak, insists Formula One legend David Coulthard after Brit equalled German’s record for individual titles

  • David Coulthard calls Lewis Hamilton ‘one of the best drivers in history’
  • Hamilton won his seventh Formula One title at the Turkish Grand Prix
  • He’s won 94 races in his 13-year career so far – three more than Schumacher

David Coulthard believes that Michael Schumacher would’ve found his match if he was competing in Formula One today, after ‘one of the best drivers in history’ Lewis Hamilton equaled the German’s title record last weekend.

Coulthard, who won 13 Grands Prix, competed against both drivers during his 15-year career in the sport, finishing second behind Schumacher in 2001. Hamilton won his first title at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix – Coulthard’s last race.

When comparing Hamilton and Schumacher, Coulthard couldn’t separate them.

‘There is no question that if Michael was still racing today, at his prime, he would be staring in the eyes of his equal,’ Coulthard told Stats Perform.

‘Because I think Michael is exceptional and I think Lewis is exceptional. And I think the way that he won his championship in Istanbul was the perfect way to show how good he is.

Hamilton only needed to finish ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the Turkish Grand Prix last Sunday to seal the record-equalling seventh title, but he ended up winning a record-extending 94th race.

‘Coming from sixth on the grid, in very difficult conditions and to win by what was quite a big margin in the end,’ Coulthard continued.

‘So there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is the real deal and not only is he one of the best drivers of his generation, arguably he is one of the best drivers in the history of the sport.’
