The offer came at the end of the second meeting between the two leaders in Hanoi, Vietnam in February 2019. Talks had failed to make any progress over North Korea’s nuclear programme, leading Mr Trump to abruptly pull out of the summit. The 45th US President told the press: “Sometimes you just have to walk.”

However, before he left, Mr Trump extend an invitation to Kim to fly him back home to Pyongyang.

The North Korean strongman had travelled to the second summit by train through China.

In an interview for the BBC series Trump Takes On the World, Matthew Pottinger, the top Asia expert on Mr Trump’s National Security Council, said: “President Trump offered Kim a lift home on Air Force One.

“The president knew that Kim had arrived on a multi-day train ride through China into Hanoi and the president said: ‘I can get you home in two hours if you want.’

“Kim declined.”

The extraordinary relationship between Donald Trump and his North Korean counterpart is captured by the US journalist Bob Woodward in his book ‘Rage’.
