Donald Trump warns voters 2020 US election 'rigged' by foreign countries printing ballots

The US President has recently kicked off his re-election campaign with a visit to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he accused presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden of being “weak” on US threats. The rally was also the subject of controversy due to it taking place in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Donald Trump’s latest attack on mail-in ballots comes on Twitter, where the president claimed that foreign countries could abuse the system.

According to Trump, foreign countries could print off millions of mail-in ballots and mail them to voters.

President Trump tweeted: “Rigged 2020 election: Millions of mail-in ballots will be printed by foreign countries, and others.

“It will be the scandal of our times!”

He continued later: “Because of mail-in ballots, 2020 will be the most rigged election in out nations history – unless this stupidity is ended.

“We voted during World War One and World War Two with no problem, but now they are using COVID in order to cheat by using mail-ins!”

It is unclear what “they” Trump is referring to, but he continues: “If people can go out and protest, riot, break into stores, and create all sorts of havoc, they can also go out and vote – and keep our election honest.

“With millions of mail-in ballots being sent out, who knows where they are going, and to whom?”

The theory was also previously suggested by US attorney general William Barr earlier in June.

Mr Barr repeated his claim in an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

Barr said: “The thing we have going for us, especially when there’s intense division in the country, is that we have peaceful transfers of power and a way of resolving it is to have an election.

“But when state governments start adopting these practices like mail-in ballots, that open the floodgates of potential fraud, then people’s confidence in the outcome of the election is going to be undermined.”

Last month, Trump also claimed that mail-in ballots in the 2020 election would be “substantially fraudulent”.

In response, Twitter introduced fact checking for the first time on the President’s tweet.

President Trump and his family have also used mail-in ballots in the past: New York’s 2017 mayoral elections and Florida’s 2020 primary election say Trump use vote-by-mail ballots.
