Unified champion Ruiz announced he would not rematch AJ in Britain after Whyte was cleared to box Oscar Rivas despite an “adverse finding” in his pre-fight drug test.

But promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports the Snickers loving Mexican has “never” wanted to fight in the UK and has used last week’s controversy as a means to swerve it.

Hearn said: “I have been ringing Ruiz’s team this week and keeping them up to speed with where we are going.

“Look, they don’t want to come to the UK, they never have done.

“I think they used the Dillian Whyte saga as a little bit of a scapegoat.

“We have to take that into consideration. Contractually, we know our position.

“We want to make sure we get the fight done and we want to respect Andy Ruiz.”

After Joshua, 29, lost his unified titles to 25-1 underdog Ruiz, also 29, the Brit superstar wasted no time in triggering an immediate rematch.

But an announcement has been the held up with a decision over the fight taking place back at New York’s Madison Square Garden or Cardiff’s Principality Stadium still not decided.

AJ’s promoter has now all but ruled out a return to America for Joshua after his disastrous US debut – but hinted an “iconic” international neutral venue could rival a UK rematch.

Hearn added: “We will decide where the venue is. A neutral venue he would be much happier with but I think I can rule out America right now.

“Cardiff is still the favourite and the front runner but there are some other interesting options that would be quite iconic internationally, that does involve quite a lot of aggravation logistically.

“It does involve a spectacle that would be quite unique.

“We haven’t ruled out anywhere yet but in the next 48 hours Andy Ruiz’s team will be alerted as to where this fight will take place.

“Don’t rule out anywhere yet and just know the fight is happening. Joshua is working hard to make sure will win those belts back.”
