The Three Lions also wore black armbands in tribute to Clemence, who won three European Cups, five league titles, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup while at Liverpool, before winning more honours with Tottenham in the 1980s.

The goalkeeper retired in 1989 but took on a coaching role with the England national team, where he made 61 appearances during his playing days.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005 and it was revealed in October of this year that he was severely ill.

Many high-profile figures in football paid tribute to Clemence including Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, who played with Clemence at Anfield.

The former Liverpool number seven said: ‘We have lost a true legend. Clem was a fantastic team-mate and great to be around.

‘I will never forget how he helped me to settle in at Anfield. Our thoughts are with the Clemence family.’

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports on Sunday: ‘A true legend of the game, such a nice man and a very gently human being. An incredible goalkeeper as well.
