A woman who accused an Indian politician of rape was fighting for her life on Monday after a car crash which her family claim was part of an assassination plot.
The woman, who accused Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her in 2017, was in a critical condition in hospital alongside her lawyer, who was also injured in the crash. Two of her aunts died in the collision between their car and a lorry.
Relatives of the 19-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the crash was a deliberate attempt to kill her so the rape case does not go to trial.
They say the girl’s security officers informed Sengar and his associates about her travel plans. None of the security officers had accompanied her on the trip but they deny involvement.
Police said they had arrested the truck driver and were investigating the claims.
Speaking to reporters, the girl’s mother said the family had previously been threatened over the rape allegation. Her father was detained by police and died in custody.
A long-time legislator who represents Bangermau in the Uttar Pradesh state assembly, Sengar has been in custody for more than a year. He denies the rape allegation and his lawyer said the crash was “just an accident”.
