Florida man convicted in fatal shooting of 11-year-old girl and mom sent to death row

A Florida man convicted of gunning down a mother and her 11-year-old daughter, who he shot five times, was sent to death row this week, making him the first person given that sentence in nearly two decades.

Circuit Judge Cheryl Caracuzzo imposed a death sentence Thursday for Marlin Larice Joseph, who fatally shot 36-year-old Kaladaa Crowell and her 11-year-old daughter Kyra Inglett in the home they shared back on Dec. 28, 2017, The Palm Beach Post reported.

“Marlin Joseph, you have not only forfeited your right to live among us, but under the law of the state of Florida, you have forfeited your right to live at all,” Caracuzzo said after announcing her decision, according to the report.

During the February trial, witnesses reported that Kyra had previous issues with one of Joseph’s daughters, who was around her age. He reportedly told his mother, who also lived in the home, that if there was another incident, he’d have to take care of it.

Investigators said his daughter texted him the day of the shooting reporting another incident, though the children had worked things out by the time he got home, according to the paper.

Joseph initially went to his room to read the Bible — but later confronted and shot Crowell when she got home, striking her several times and then again in the head as she pleaded for help, the outlet reported, citing police.

Then, he allegedly chased Kyra out of the home as she fled, striking her five times, including three times in the head.

“Kyra was no doubt aware of her impending death,” Caracuzzo said as she explained the reasoning for her sentence. “There can be nothing more terrifying for a child than knowing that someone has just shot their mother multiple times and now was coming after them.”

“There is no doubt that this panic-stricken little girl experienced a level of terror that no child or no one should ever have to endure,” she added.

Prior to Joseph, the last person to be sentenced to death in Palm Beach County was John J. Chamberlain in 2002, according to the report.

He was later resentenced to life behind bars.
