Florida youth track and field coach accused of raping teen athlete

A popular youth track and field coach in Florida was recently accused of raping a 14-year-old athlete in 2010 and molesting her younger sister last year.

Darius Tremayne Lawshea, 45, the head coach at the Miami Gardens Xpress track and field club, was arrested on Sunday and charged with multiple counts of sexual battery on a minor and of lewd and lascivious molestation on a child, local ABC-affiliate WPLG reported.

Now 24, his alleged rape victim said she learned recently that Lawshea had “sexually molested her little sister, so therefore she knew it was important to finally speak up,” according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the station.

She told authorities that Lawshea, who is known as “Coach D,” sexually assaulted her three times when was on his track team, including twice in his car and once at his apartment, when she was spending the night there because they had a meet early the next morning, WTVJ reported.

The woman said she never reported the sexual assaults because she knew the coach was “loved by everyone in the community and she didn’t want to get in trouble,” the affidavit said.

Police said Lawshea first made sexual advances to the other alleged victim in 2018 when she was 14. Then, in July 2019, he’s accused of offering the teen girl $200 in exchange for sex.

Later that month, Lawshea allegedly showed up to the girl’s home unannounced, claiming he was there to check up on her when she was home alone, the arrest report stated. He allegedly molested her and attempted to kiss her and pull her shirt down in her bedroom, but she was able to get away, the report said.

The creepy coach made local headlines in 2018 after he apparently stood up to a man armed with a gun who threatened him while he was leading a prayer circle with more than 100 members of his track team.

He was being held without bond on Monday.

Lawshea’s attorney said his client was innocent and planned to fight the charges, WTVJ reported.

“My client is a well respected member of the community, respected among many youths who are now adults,” the lawyer said, “there’s been an outpouring of support for Mr. Lawshea.”
