Former soldier waterboarded his girlfriend in attempt to have her confess to cheating, court hears

A former soldier waterboarded his girlfriend in an attempt to have her confess to cheating on him, a court has heard.

Gareth Thomas, 37, taped a pillow over the face of his then-partner and poured water over her as part of a horrific campaign of abuse.

Mr Thomas, from Blaenavon, near Pontypool, South Wales, was convicted of three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and the court heard how he had also made his partner put on boxing gloves and take part in “uneven bouts” with him.

Describing the traumatic events, Prosecutor Harry Baker told Newport Crown Court: “He put a pillow over her head, taped it over her and started pouring water over her.

“She is unsure how long it lasted. He told her: ‘Stop playing your silly games and tell the truth.’

“He then took the pillow off her and made her clean up the water.”
