Frank Warren reveals Mike Tyson does NOT figure in his all-time top 10 heavyweight boxers

Frank Warren reveals Mike Tyson does NOT figure in his all-time top 10 heavyweight boxers because he was ‘sodding around, drugging it and boozing’ before his prison spell meant he ‘just didn’t last the course’

  • Mike Tyson returns to the ring next week to take on Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition
  • The ex-undisputed champion remains the youngest heavyweight title winner
  • But Frank Warren claims life away from the ring meant he did not last as a boxer
  • Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and spent three years in jail before release

Frank Warren insists he does not count Mike Tyson among his list of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.

Tyson’s return to the ring is edging ever closer with the former undisputed champion set to take on Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition fight a week on Saturday in California.

The 54-year-old still holds the record as the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title after defeating Trevor Berbick to claim the WBC belt at the age of just 20, and went on to develop a reputation for explosive knockouts during his professional career.

But promoter Warren insists it is Tyson’s life away from the ring – including spending time in prison for rape in 1992 –  that makes him believe ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ should not be discussed in the top 10 of all-time greats.

Warren told talkSPORT: ‘Mike Tyson when he was young and first got into boxing, he was exciting.

‘A bit like Daniel Dubois in some ways, he sort of captured the public’s imagination in devastating style.

‘He won a world title and everybody was talking about him. For me, he was one of the most exciting young heavyweights.

‘However, he doesn’t get in my top ten because he just did not last the course.

‘He was sodding around, drugging it and boozing, went to prison. He just didn’t do it for me.’

‘Iron Mike’ was found guilty of raping 18-year-old Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America contestant, in a hotel room by an Indianapolis jury nearly thirty years ago.

Tyson was sentenced to six years in jail following the conviction, and served three before he was released in 1995.
