Game of Thrones: Jon Snow killed Daenerys and still got EVERYTHING he always wanted

Poor Jon Snow. He was the lost and hidden Targaryen heir who only found out his heritage and birthright at the last moment. To accept his destiny would have meant destroying the only dream of the woman he loved. So he denied his true self and still lost Daenerys, he still lost everything – his freedom, his family, all he ever wanted. Or did he?

Gsme of Thrones on HBO ended Season Eight with Jon Snow back at the wall. Exiled from his land, separated from his family, he is once again back on the Night’s Watch.

Which is what he wanted from the very beginning.

In Jon’s very first point of view chapter in the first book, A Game of Thrones, all Jon wants is to take the Black. He has felt an outsider all his life, an unwanted burden with no clear purpose.

Jon tells his uncle Benjen: “I want to serve in the Night’s Watch.” But the book makes it clear it is not a childish fantasy. “He had thought on it long and hard, lying abed at night while his brothers slept around him.”

Jon swears his oath and also for the first time builds a real family, a real place where he belongs.

It is all he ever wanted.

Dolorous Edd, Pypp and Grenn became Jon’s brothers. Later he also built ties among the wildlings with Ygritte and even Mance Rayder. In both situations he finds love, friendship and total acceptance.

These are the strongest connections he ever feels. Yes, he loves Daenerys but he never feels he completely belongs with her and the TV show makes it clear, in the end, he never can. Daenerys will always put her throne and her cause above everyone.

The only member of his family who he truly loves and is accepted by is Arya. But she has gone.

Yes, there is also Sam but he (somehow, inexplicably) become the Grand Measter at King’s Landing. Even if Jon had not been banished (inexplicably, nonsensically) on Grey Worm’s demands, there was a never a real place for Jon there. He never wanted the throne, nor would he ever be at home in any court.

Back at the Wall Jon is reunited with Ghost, hsi direwolf. The Stark children’s direwolves have been the key to all their fates and Ghost is waiting for Jon is the pace he needs to be.

Jon found family and belonging with the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. Before he had to choose between them. Now he can have both.

Jon is where he belongs. Where he knows who he is and what his purpose is. This is all he ever wanted.
