Game of Thrones: Rickon Stark was almost scrapped from HBO series – here's why

Game of Thrones proved to be a huge hit when HBO brought George R.R. Martin’s creation to life. However, the novels almost nearly didn’t make it on to the small screen as the original pilot for the fantasy series was plagued with disasters and proved the drama could have been very different to the series fans know and love.

Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Untold Story of the Epic Series will give readers a behind-the-scenes account of how the series was made.

There was a 15-year battle to pull off the series and writer George has explained the scenes that were scrapped from the finished series.

The Stark family are one of the most important families in the entire Game of Thrones series.

Several times throughout the drama, the Starks are involved in key scenes that change the direction of the series.

However, creator George has explained Rickon Stark (played by Art Parkinson) was almost cut after discussions with show bosses during the filming of the pilot.

He explained: “The biggest thing was Dan and David called me up and had the idea of eliminating Rickon, the youngest of the Stark children because he didn’t do much in the first book.

“I said I had important plans for him, so they kept him.”

Rickon and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) were both thought to have died at the hands of Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen).

Discussing the pilot, he said: “He said: “As a wedding gift, Khal Drogo gives Daenerys a silver horse and she rides away.

“For a moment you think she’s fleeing. Then she turns the horse around and leaps the horse over a big campfire. Drogo is very impressed, and it starts the relationship on a good note.

“We tried to film this scene. We got a top stunt rider and a top horse, a silver filly, but the filly would not jump that campfire.

“She got close and then was like, ‘There’s fire there!’ and would turn the other way.

“We tried to film it a half dozen ways. So [director Tom McCarthy] goes, ‘Put out the fire and we’ll do the fire with CGI.’”

George added: “They put out the fire and the horse would still not jump the dead fire.

“It’s a smart horse. It knows it’s not burning now, but it was burning a little while ago!

“So they had to scrap that sequence, which was unfortunate, as it was a bonding moment between Dany and Khal Drogo.”

Game of Thrones is available to stream on NOW TV now.
