When is Gavin & Stacey returning?

Gavin & Stacey is back for a one off-Christmas special nearly ten years after it left our screens.

The show’s creators James Corden and Ruth Jones said in a statement: “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like.

“And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.

“We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

Gavin & Stacey ran for three series on the BBC from 2007 until 2010.

The show proved to be a massive hit, and made a global star out of James Corden.

And over the years the pair have hinted the show could make a comeback.

On April 17, 2018, Ruth told ITV’s Lorraine that she had been speaking about the show with her co-star and writing buddy: “James and I were talking about this [the characters] the other day.

“I think Baby Neil, who is now probably about 11… Nessa is training him down the slots.”

The show was written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who played Smithy and Nessa

Will James be coming back?

Yes, James – who now hosts The Late Late Show in the US – was the one to make the exciting announcement.

The telly star sent fans wild when he tweeted a picture of a Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special 2019 script on a table.

He wrote: “Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while…We’re excited to share it with you.

“See you on Christmas Day @BBCOne #GavinandStacey.”

In a statement, the pair said: “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like.

And Ruth and James’ co-star Rob Brydon told The Sun he believed there could be room for a one-off special.

He explained: “If James and Ruth want to do it then I think we’d all do it.

“It’s them really. I think it’s a real balance between, ‘let’s leave it on a high, people love it,’ but there’s also a big feeling of, ‘oh it would be so lovely to get back together and do a special.”

Why was the show ever cancelled?

There’s no specific reason as to why the show was every cancelled, as far as the public knows.

The successful show had run for three series on the BBC – plus a Christmas Special – from 2007 until 2010, and it seemed like the right time to end things for the characters.

As well as the show’s stars embarking on new and exciting projects – including James becoming the new The Late Late Show in the US.

And despite being given a glimpse of the script’s front page, fans weren’t given any clues about what the one-off episode will be about.

They’ll have to wait to find out if the series will pick up where it left off or if it will be following the famous characters nine years on.

The finale episode, which aired on New Year’s Day in 2010 saw a record 10.25million tune in.
