Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., is under investigation by the Florida State Bar for a threatening tweet he posted ahead of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony, The Daily Beast reported.

The state bar told the news outlet it was looking into whether Gaetz, a lawyer, violated professional conduct rules.

The probe centers around a tweet Gaetz sent questioning Cohen’s faithfulness to his wife which came one day before Cohen’s scheduled appearance between the House Oversight Committee.

State bar spokesperson Francine Walker would not discuss details but told the outlet the bar is “quite aware of [Gaetz’s] comments . . . and we have opened an investigation.”

The Tuesday tweet, now deleted, called out Cohen, asking “Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot . . .”

Gaetz initially defended the tweet, saying, “This is what it looks like to compete in the marketplace of ideas,” but under pressure, he deleted the tweet and apologized.

The Florida Bar’s rules of professional conduct state lawyers “should conform to the requirements of the law, both in professional service to clients and in the lawyer’s business and personal affairs” and “should use the law’s procedures only for legitimate purposes and not to harass or intimidate others.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is warning the House Ethics Committee will “vigilantly monitor” members’ statements on social media.
