Iain Tate, 43, was forced to take a gruelling four flights to make his way home from Marbella after his pals stumped up £600 to send him round the world.
The firefighter had already suffered humiliation at the hands of his 11-man stag party, who made him arrive in Marbella dressed in a black wig, pink top, matching dangle ear rings, leather skirt and fishnet stockings in homage to Freddie Mercury.
The Queen frontman wore the outfit in the iconic video to ‘I Want to Break Free’.
His group of cheeky mates, including five other firefighters, two IT experts, a police officer and an air traffic controller, then sent their soon-to-be married pal on a 26-hour journey home.
A direct flight from the Costa del Sol to the UK usually takes little over three hours.
Iain’s epic solo trip took him on an 1am flight from Malaga to Dusseldorf in Germany – a whopping 1,154 miles – before a second flight to Paris, then on to Dublin before heading home to Stockton-on-Tees.
To add to the misery, Iain suffered a three hour delay at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, costing him his connection flight home from Ireland to Leeds Bradford airport.
Another delayed departure meant that all hotels were booked up, meaning the stag was forced to bed down in the airport.
“I had to book another flight to get a boarding card,” a shattered Iain told the Mirror.
“Iain was struggling to see the funny side when he missed his last flight home”
Pal Nick Bass
“It cost £40 for the missed flight and about £100 for the new one.”
Best mate Nick Bass, 36, said the prank was inspired by football hero Gazza, who once bored a series of flights one for best pal Jimmy ‘Fivebellies’ Gardner whilst playing in Italy.
“Iain was struggling to see the funny side when he missed his last flight home,” said Nick.
The pranks did not stop with the trip and costume either – the groom was also caught in a pair of dissolving swimming trunks whilst partying in Marbella, forcing him to reveal all as he dashed from the pool.
Iain eventually landed in the UK at 1pm on Tuesday – over 24 hours after he first set off from Spain.
Mum-of-four and finance Emma, 38, was waiting for her dreary partner.
The couple, who have six children between them from previous relationships, are set to marry at Bedworth Hall in Darlington in November.
Iain said: “It should make for a good best man’s speech, but I felt like Judith Chalmers after all those air miles.
“It was bad enough setting off from the fire station dressed as Freddie Mercury.”
