Hackers swipe $2M from Wisconsin Trump reelection account

Hackers siphoned more than $2 million from a Wisconsin campaign account for President Trump’s reelection bid, state Republican Party officials revealed Thursday.

The cyber heist, initially discovered by state GOP officials last week, comes as Trump is in a heated election battle with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden — with both men making a final push for Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes.

Trump, who is scheduled to make his third visit to the Badger State on Friday, edged out Hillary Clinton in the state by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016 — making Wisconsin a key battleground in the race.

Most polls currently have Biden leading by single-digits in the state.

Wisconsin GOP Chairman Andrew Hitt said the party notified the FBI of the hacked account last week.

The missing money, totaling $2.3 million, came from the state party’s federal account. Hitt said the thieves altered invoices from four vendors contracted for direct-mail services for the Trump campaign — with the payments going to the hackers instead of the vendors.

“We have been in contact with the state party and are assisting them through this process,” Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens said. “The RNC never left Wisconsin after 2016, and we are confident that our ground game and the millions we are spending on TV and digital will deliver us another win there in 2020.”

However, the hacking attack stirred up existing tensions between national GOP leaders and the state party in the wake of questionable bookkeeping in 2018 that led to a shakeup in the Wisconsin party’s leadership.

A state Democratic Party spokesman said there have also been 800 phishing attacks attempted on their funds but none have succeeded.
