SALAD fans would have to spend almost an hour in a boxing ring to work off the calories in some high street versions.
Popular healthy eating chains such as Pret, Eat, Pod and Itsu, are selling an increasing number of plant-based salads in a bid to attract health conscious vegan punters.
But campaigners have warned customers to check salt, carbohydrate and saturated fat levels before settling on a lunch choice as some options could be fattening and unhealthy.
And nutritionists have suggested vegan and vegetarian diners might have to take up more exercise than they bargained for if they want to burn off the calories in their lunch.
For example, popular high street chain Eat’s vegetarian friendly Ultimate Pesto Pasta salad with dressing, contains a whopping 888 calories.
Using healthcare firm Bupa’s online calculator, the average 13-stone male would have to box for 53 minutes to burn it off.
FATS AND SALT ALERT
Similarly, the average UK female, weighing 70.2kg’s (11 stone) would have to go whitewater rafting for over two and a half hours or play golf for almost three hours (170mins) to burn off the same level of cals.
Pret’s Falafel Mezze, with 358 calories, was “pretty well balanced”, nutritionists said.
But that means a male diner would have to box for 21 minutes to burn off the calorie total while female customers would have to play the accordion for almost three hours (170 minutes) to ensure they kept the weight off.
The vegan and vegetarian suitable Gym Box Salad at Pod was described as “quite high in healthy fat” but still a “good, high in protein”, lunch choice.

The ‘One You’ campaign encourages Brits to stick to 400 calories for breakfast and 600 calories for both lunch and dinner.
It also comes just months after the World Health Organisation warned Britain is now the third fattest nation in Europe fuelled by poor diet choices.
High street salads with most calories:
1. Pret – Falafel Mezze – 358calories – 22.8grams of fat – 3.1grams of saturated fats and 2.5grams of salt.
2. Eat – Ultimate Pesto Pasta with dressing – 888cals – 21grams of fat – 9.6grams of sat fats – 1.5grams of salt.
3. Pod – Gym Box – 506cals – 27.1grams of fats – 2.9grams of sat fats – 1.6grams of salt.
4. Itsu – No Meat Mondays salad – 576cals – 16.1grams of fats – 3.1grams of sat fats – 2.89grams of salt.
5. Leon – The New Original Salad – 450cals – 37grams of fats – 11grams of sat fats – 1.3grams of salt.
