'How bad is this tweet?': Gary Neville slams Manchester United for tasteless post

‘How bad is this?’ Gary Neville slams Manchester United tweet laughing at fans being shut out of grounds in crass message promoting their sponsors

  • Manchester United fans will be watching from home as their side face Newcastle
  • Now they’ll also have to pay £14.95 to do so in derided new pay-per-view games
  • Failing to read the room, United’s Twitter account then Tweeted a tasteless joke
  • Gary Neville has criticised the Premier League’s recent moves and was furious
  • The Old Trafford side later deleted the tweet but not before angry fans saw it

Manchester United are giving a masterclass in alienating their fanbase at the moment, with club legend Gary Neville enraged by the club’s behaviour again.

The Premier League drew a furious backlash from supporters after announcing a new pay-per-view service – requiring viewers to shell-out an extra £14.95 to watch behind-closed-doors games on top of their BT Sport and Sky packages.

Manchester United are one of the first teams to feature on the Box Office channels, travelling to Newcastle on Saturday evening to play at an empty St James’ Park.

Apparently unaware of fans’ misery at being lumped with a new charge to watch their team amid employment uncertainty across the country, all while a return to their second-home beside the pitch remains distant, United tweeted:

‘At least there’s no climbing up 14 flights of stairs to get to the away end at St James’ Park for this one… where are you watching #NEWMUN from?’

The post was later deleted but not before Neville had seen it, with the former right-back and Sky pundit responding: ‘How bad is this tweet?’

The former United right-back replied angrily before the tweet was deleted, and fans agreed

Fans echoed Neville’s view in the replies section, with the likes of @CalFerguson writing: ‘A grim reflection of modern-day football at the top level.’

United were also at the centre of Project Big Picture, a plot slammed as a power grab by the Big Six in the Premier League and later canned after a major outcry.

It’s been as bad on the pitch too, with United needing a positive result on Saturday to help put the 6-1 mauling against Tottenham in the past.
