Inside the WTA Wimbledon launch party: Navratilova and Evert encourage today's stars to put aside rivalries

Of those current players who made event at the Jumeriah Carlton Towers, where hotel rooms start at £569 pounds per night, there was a sense of electric tension with another Grand Slam just days away.

Despite a specially prepared Nutella birthday cake being brought out for world no 22 Croatian Donna Vekic and Johanna Konta, resplendent in a watermelon pink corduroy 1970’s inspired trouser suit belting out “happy birthday”, the rivalries were easier to spot.

In some cases the higher up the world rankings, the briefer the greetings as was the case for Osaka and Vekic, who would not be drawn on her recent split from Swiss player Stan Wawrinka.

One group though who seemed to have an almost sisterly bond were the young British trio of Harriet Dart, Katie Swan and Katie Dunne, as they fell over in sticthes of laughter as the had their photos taken.

Others stuck to their husbands and boyfriends including Caroline Wozniaki who married basket ball player David Lee just two weeks ago. Ukranian Elina Svitoliva insisted on being photographed with French tennis beau Gael Monfils just weeks after rumours they had broken up after their joint Instagram account had been deleted.
