Instagram now allows all users to pin comments at top of posts in an effort to help moderate abusive replies and promote positive ones

  • Instagram is rolling out its reply pinning feature to users everywhere
  • It allows users to pin three comments to the top of their comment threads
  • The company hopes it will boost comments promoting healthier convesations

Instagram will now let users everywhere pin comments to the top of their posts in an effort to promote a healthier online conversation.

The feature is being introduced across the world after a test in May and lets users pin three comments to their posts which will appear at the top of each comment thread.

That test coincided with the ability to bulk delete old posts on Instagram and Facebook, its parent company.

According to Instagram, the feature is being rolled out in an effort to help give users greater control over how conversations unfold on the platform by letting them promote positive comments over undesirable ones.

‘This feature gives you a way to set the tone for your account and engage with your community by pinning a select number of comments to the top of your comments thread,’ a spokesperson said in May.

To pin a comments, users can swipe left on a comment to reveal options for reporting, deleting, and replying. A fourth option in the screen will now allow users to pin a comment as well.

The decision to expand the feature across the entire platform is one of many steps by Instagram to crack down on bullying and toxic behavior over the last year.

In addition to pinning comments, it has also introduced AI tools that automatically block harmful comments.

It has also rolled out tools that let users restrict who can and can’t see their content in the hopes that they’ll be able to quickly shield themselves from abuse if and when they’re confronted with it.

That greater control has also been expanded to tags by letting users control which posts they’re tagged in.

”You can choose whether you want everyone, only people you follow or no-one to be able to tag or mention you in a comment, caption or Story,’ the company said at the time.
