Jamie Vardy urges Leicester to 'keep building' after returning from injury to bag winner at Arsenal

Jamie Vardy urges Leicester to ‘keep building’ after the striker returned from injury to score the winner in ‘big’ victory over Arsenal

  • Jamie Vardy scored the winner for Leicester in a 1-0 victory over Arsenal
  • The Foxes star missed two games injured, both defeats where they didn’t score
  • The striker has now bagged 11 goals in 12 matches against the Emirates side
  • Vardy explained the win was ‘big’ for the club and he plans to keep progressing

Jamie Vardy hailed Leicester’s ‘big’ win at Arsenal on Sunday as the veteran striker came off the bench to haunt the north London side again.

The forward notched the winner at the Emirates to move the Foxes to within one point of Premier League leaders Everton on a euphoric night for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

The Gunners, who famously tried to sign Vardy in 2016, will be sick of the sight of the prolific striker – who has now notched 11 times in 12 games against the Londoners.

But when trying to explain his brilliant record against the Gunners, Vardy said: ‘I’m not sure what it is (why my record is so good versus Arsenal).

‘It was a good little build-up and Cengiz put it on a plate for me.

‘The win gives us a little boost. The last two games in the league have not been good enough so to come in and put in a performance like we have is good for the team.

‘We just have to keep building on that now. It was a tough win. It’s big for us but it’s just the next game where we want to keep improving. To get three points is brilliant.’

Vardy missed Leicester’s previous two fixtures ahead of the win over Mikel Arteta’s men with a calf problem.

Speaking before the game Rodgers insisted he didn’t want to take any fitness risks with his talismanic attacker.

And the 33-year-old insists he had no qualms with coming off the bench despite being passed fit for the clash.

‘Me and the manager spoke yesterday and that was always the plan because I’m coming back from a little niggle,’ Vardy added.

‘You don’t want to be chucked straight in, it’s about feeling your way back into it.

‘It was probably going to be the last 20 minutes of half-an-hour and that’s what has happened and luckily I came on and made an impact and we can take three points home.’
