Jordan Henderson accuses VAR of 'bending the lines' after late goal is ruled offside

‘I think they bend the lines sometimes to make it offside… I’m not sure how they do it, I’ve seen it before’: Jordan Henderson sensationally accuses VAR of altering picture to disallow goal after being robbed of injury-time Merseyside derby winner by controversial decision

  • Jordan Henderson thought he scored a late match-winner against Everton
  • His goal was disallowed for Sadio Mane being marginally offside leading up to it
  • The Liverpool captain was unhappy with VAR after the goal cost Liverpool a win

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has suggested VAR officials ‘bend the lines’ to disallow goals.

Henderson thought he scored a late match-winner against Everton, however VAR overruled the decision as they judged Sadio Mane to be offside in the build-up.

It looked the tightest of decisions with BT Sport pundits questioning whether it was truly offside.

After the match, Henderson accused VAR of altering the line to disallow goals and said he has ‘seen it before.

He told BT Sport: ‘It must be offside with VAR, it’s what everyone wants.

‘I think they bend the lines sometimes to make it offside. I’m not sure how they do it, I’ve seen it before.

‘It’s disappointing we haven’t got the win. I thought the performance was very good and we deserved to win the game. I think Everton will be happier with the draw.’

Liverpool felt unlucky not to win the game with Jordan Pickford also lucky to remain on the pitch after his challenge which ended Virgil Van Dijk’s game.

Richarlison was sent off for a challenge on Thiago in what was a lively Merseyside Derby.

It was the 92nd minute of the game when Henderson’s shot went through the arms of Pickford who was the most relieved man at Goodison Park.

Henderson was found by Mane who was put through after a fantastic pass by Thiago – only for the Senegalese forward to be ruled offside.

After the game, BT Sport pundit and former Everton player Leon Osman said Sadio Mane looked onside to him from the pictures.

He said: It’s down to the millimetre, to me with the naked eye, it looks onside.

‘It spared Pickford’s blushes. He’s had a great game up to that point but you’ve got to save those efforts.’

Joe Cole added: ‘It’s modern football, we looked at it and we thought it wasn’t offside. He’s offside by millimetres. It took away from Liverpool fans what would have been an amazing finish.’

And Peter Crouch, a former Liverpool player, said:  ‘It just frustrates me. People say I’m watching if through red tinter glasses. I don’t want to be discussing armpits and sleeves.

‘What happened to giving the attacking player the benefit of the doubt, I always used to enjoy that. Nobody knows why that was chalked off.’
