Jose Mourinho told pals he knew he would be sacked as Man United boss after losing to Liverpool at Anfield

JOSE MOURINHO knew the writing was on the wall at Manchester United, message sent to close friends have revealed.

The 56-year-old was dismissed in the December following the 3-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Mourinho lasted 144 matches as United boss

News the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid boss had been given his marching orders came less than 24 hours after the loss

And he reportedly told close confidants he knew he would be sacked by the Old Trafford hierarchy – but was willing to fight on.

The Daily Mail report he told friends in a text message: “I’m done after this. But I’m not quitting.”

Not handing in his notice won Mourinho a majority share of a £19.6million payout, as revealed by the club this month.

Solskjaer has reinvigorated United

But that has been a small price to pay for helping to reinstall some of the club’s traditions.

Interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has galvanised the club since taking over, bringing the best out of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.

The 0-0 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday extended the Norwegian’s domestic unbeaten run to 13 games – his only defeat coming against Paris Saint-Germain.

United were nine points adrift of the top four when Mourinho was sacked, but are now just one behind fourth place Arsenal in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
