ONE GP is having to cover home visits for half a million patients as the NHS out-of-hours GP crisis is laid bare.

Ten years ago eight GPs covered the 1,346 square mile area in Shropshire, but now one doctor has sole responsibility for all 500,000 patients, the Daily Mail revealed last night.

Cancer patients have been left in agony as there was no GP available to administer morphine, and some patients have been been told to drive over an hour to Wales to see a doctor at weekends or in the evening because of the shortage.

The crisis has been blamed on a lack of funds, and a shortage of GPs willing to work unsocial hours.
