LARA Trump has blasted Germany’s policy of warmly welcoming refugees, saying it was “one of the worst things that ever happened” to the country.

Ms Trump, 36, who is effectively the face of Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, appeared on Fox Business to talk about the US president’s immigration policies when she made the controversial remarks.

She said: “It was the downfall of Germany,” and added: “It was one of the worst things that ever happened to Germany,” in reference to the influx of people in 2015.

Ms Trump continued: “This president knows that. He’s trying to prevent that from happening here, but Congress has got to get their act together and do the right thing here for the American people.”

Her comments led to a backlash with many pointing to the Nazi regime, the Holocaust and the Second World War as episodes in Germany’s history that many agreed were worse in the nation’s past.

Tom Hillgardner sarcastically wrote on Twitter: “Lara Trump seems to be very upset that all of Hitler’s hard work on ethnic cleansing is being ruined by Merkel’s compassion for refugees and obedience to international law about admitting migrant refugees to Germany.”

‘THE DOWNFALL OF GERMANY’

Dr Dena Grayson said: “Lara Trump thinks that “one of the worst things that ever happened to #Germany” is Angela Merkel’s #immigration policy that let in refugees, but not the Nazi’s murder of millions of innocent people.”

Josh Schwerin simply wrote: “About 6 million dead Jews would strongly disagree.”

Between 2011 and 2016 Germany’s economy grew by an average 0.2 per cent a year due to EU immigration, research carried out by the German Institute for Economic Research has shown.

The high watermark of immigration into Germany in recent years came in 2015 when more than 1.1million immigrants arrived in the EU country, according to the German statistics office.

Ms Trump, who is married to Donald Trump’s son Eric, had appeared on the show to defend the 45th president’s immigration policies who has pledged to reduce the number of refugees and migrants seeking asylum along the US-Mexico border.

He sparked controversy earlier this year when he declared a national emergency to reallocate funds for his long-proposed wall at the border with Mexico after Congress refused to fund his demands.

The President attacked Angela Merkel’s immigration policies in 2016 during the presidential campaign and labelled the German Chancellor’s policy as “insane”.

Last year Mr Trump claimed that crime in Germany was “way up” due to immigration but figures show crime fell by nine per cent in 2017, a 25-year low.
