NEMANJA VIDIC believes Manchester United do not need Virgil van Dijk – because he is no better than their current crop of defenders.

The Red Devils legend, 37, is so confident in Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and even Phil Jones that he believes no Liverpool or Chelsea defenders would get into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence.

Speaking to Omnisport, the ex-defender said: “Phil Jones did well in the recent games he played, Chris Smalling is a good defender, [Eric] Bailly as well.

“I think we have four solid defenders and with the right match I think they can perform to the best of their capabilities.

“Lindelof had a difficult time in the beginning. Well done to him to come back. It’s not easy, especially playing for Manchester United, big club, to not start that well and have criticism from the media.

“Overall, I said even before when they didn’t have great games, if you look at the other teams, I would not have any defenders of Liverpool or Chelsea, I don’t think they have better defenders than we have.”

Liverpool of course paid a whopping £75million to sign van Dijk from Southampton a year ago.

And Vidic was happy to praise the Liverpool man, who has been in fine form this season.

He added: “He’s doing a great job – he’s strong physically, he’s fast, he’s a presence on the pitch.

“He’s a great defender, top defender, but I’m saying when teams are doing well, everyone gets recognition.

“I know that because I played for Man United and when you’re doing well, when you’re scoring goals, [getting] a few clean sheets, straight away people start talking about how good you are.”

Of course, Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford this afternoon in a game which could make or break the Merseysiders’ season as they look to win a maiden Premier League title.

And the Serbian star – who had a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand during their time together at United – did not hold back with his mind games.

Vidic’s own record against Liverpool was poor. In 13 meetings, he won seven and lost six but was sent off a staggering FOUR times as he struggled to cope with former Kop hero Fernando Torres.
