The Yankees have lost five straight games and go into the five-game Subway Series this weekend reeling. They have a ton of guys hurt and the latest is Aaron Judge, who got hurt yet again Wednesday night against the Braves. That’s where we start on the latest episode of the “Pinstripe Pod” with Chris Shearn and Jeff Nelson.
I read off some of the biggest stories to the guys and get their reactions in our weekly “In The Paper” segment. Judge came first and foremost. Are the guys worried about the constant injuries and his inability to stay on the field? Should Masahiro Tanaka have been pulled? He said he emptied the tank after the game. Is that concerning at just 66 pitches? Gerrit Cole finally had a rough outing, giving up three homers and five runs in his first loss since May 22, 2019. Should there be any worries over Cole? Are the Yankees purposely holding off from J.A. Happ so he doesn’t reach 10 starts to get the $17 million vesting option? Finally, the guys look ahead to the five-game Subway Series, what young pitchers we might see make starts for them and if they should consider making a trade before the deadline. I then make a steak-dinner wager with Shearn and Nellie over the series this weekend.
YES Network color commentator, five-time World Series champion, five-time All Star and Yankees great David Cone then joins the show. It’s David Cone week here on our NY Post baseball podcasts, after he joined me and Nelson Figueroa Monday on “Amazin’ But True” podcast. Cone opens up the chat talking Judge and his latest injury, all the injuries in the shortened season, Tanaka’s short leash and pitchers getting pulled early. Coney talks about being teammates with Jeff Nelson and what those experiences were like. He also shines light on how special it was to be part of the first Subway Series in 1997.
