Dave Evans saved the money and booked a hotel after watching the Reds storm their way through the group stages.
But he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has had to cancel the trip, watching the final from his hospice bed.
Wife Liz told Coventry Live from New Zealand: “We first moved to New Zealand on December 19, 2018, and on February 22 he was diagnosed with bile duct cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma).
“We were told it was inoperable, and without chemo, he would only have a few months to live.
“It was a massive shock to us as he wasn’t ill beforehand. We had to have tests, scans and medicals done before we emigrated over here and nothing came up there.
“We’ve already had a couple of videos and I think the dream would be to get a message from Steven Gerrard”
“It was about a month after we got here that Dave got a stomach ache and we both had a tummy bug but mine cleared up and his didn’t.”
She added: “We managed to save £10,000 for the trip to Madrid but that has now paid for Dave’s funeral.
“Last week, I was really upset so I set out to get video messages from Liverpool legends past and present.
“We’ve already had a couple of videos and I think the dream would be to get a message from Steven Gerrard.
“It’s really made Dave smile, and kept us positive.”
