The Reds would have seen their championship hopes take a serious knock as they were being held 1-1 at home to Tottenham before a late, late own goal.

Liverpool supporters would have hoped that the 400th goal under Klopp had been a stunner – maybe from the left foot of Mohamed Salah.

Still, the value of the goal when it came made it as attractive as any other for fans, even if it was Toby Alderweireld putting the ball into his own net.

One joked on Twitter: “That 400th Liverpool goal under Jurgen Klopp is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

Another said: “The 400th goal scored by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp is an own goal by Toby Alderweireld and it could prove to be a huge, huge goal.

“Unbelievably big result that.”

There were many other similar comments.

One wrote: “Liverpool gonna be the team that gives me a heart attack, Jesus, what a massive goal, 400th Liverpool goal under Klopp.”

The goal came in the 90th minute to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory and keep the pressure on at the top of the Premier League table alongside Manchester City.

A deep cross from the left found Salah and he headed back across goal for what should have been a comfortable save for Hugo Lloris.

The French goalkeeper spilled the ball though to the feet of defender Alderweireld and he couldn’t avoid knocking it over the line from close range.

Liverpool had gone ahead through Roberto Firmino after 16 minutes but Spurs looked strong in the second half and pulled level through Lucas Moura after 70 minutes.

Klopp’s side looked like they were going to drop two points until the late stroke of fortune.

Liverpool now are two points clear at the top of the table on 79 points while City have a game in hand.
