Jack Fleming, 9, couldn’t believe his luck when the former Kop legend organised a meeting with him and his mum before Liverpool’s opening game of the season.

The young lad’s father, Robbie Fleming, 26, was found dead in the family home in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, last June following a long battle with depression.

The dad and lad were huge Liverpool fans who had always dreamed of meeting Gerrard together but didn’t get the chance when Robbie’s young life was tragically cut short.

Determined to make Jack’s dream come true, Robbie’s mum and dad sent out a social media plea to Gerrard in a bid to reach the former England international.

And after the appeal made it into local paper the Echo, the midfield ace got in touch to organise a day out for Jack.

Jack’s mother, Alison, said: “Robbie and Jack were desperate to meet Steven Gerrard, but never got to meet him.

“It would give me a bit of comfort to know that he knows how much Robbie loved him.”

After flying out from Belfast, Jack and his mum flew into Liverpool ready to meet the man himself. They travelled to Formby where Gerrard has a property and had lunch together in Starbucks.

Alison added: “There was not a person there, it was just us. I think he must have phoned up beforehand to ask for the privacy.”

Liverpool legend Gerrard signed a number of items for young Jack and provided him and his mum with tickets for the big game.

Alison went on: “I first saw him coming through the door and Jack’s face we will never forget it – it was priceless.

“It was a bit of a bittersweet moment, as all me and my husband could think of was how happy Robbie would have been to meet him.

“I got very emotional and tried to hold back my tears, but unfortunately I was unable to.

“I’m so happy we managed to get hold of him and make our son known to him.

“I hope our son is smiling down and happy that me and his dad managed to succeed in this.”

Jurgen Klopp’s men went on to trash Norwich 4 – 1, with Mo Sarah and Virgil van Dijk among the scorers. Next up for the Reds is an away trip to Southampton.
